I was expecting a quiet week in Bachelor nation, since The Bachelorette didn’t even air last night due to basketball, but yesterday morning I received a gchat from my husband in such an urgent tone, I thought he may have lost a limb:

I realized his limbs were fine, but my favorite summer show was not. The article Stephen sent me has since been updated. But when I read it, the gist was that on the first day of Bachelor in Paradise shooting, things got weird in a hot tub, and now the show is cancelled. Which seemed strange to me, because Bachelor In Paradise could accurately be subtitled Things Get Weird in Hot Tubs.
But throughout the day a number of you sent me articles that made it clear that the incident was more than just things getting weird. Because the female contestant was allegedly too drunk to give consent, DeMario Jackson may actually be guilty of sexual misconduct (news outlets are using his name but not the female contestant’s. I assume there are legal reasons for this).
And that’s pretty unsettling. But what really bothers me is, as I understand it, the show was going to go on as planned until one single producer said she wasn’t okay with what happened. According to what I’ve read, she saw the footage and was so repulsed that she’s now suing production.
I don’t know if that same producer witnessed the alleged misconduct as it happened. But my impression is that she did not, and that other producers filmed to encounter and did nothing to stop it, even though other contestants thought they should.
One contestant told People,
“People are pissed, and not just at DeMario. We’re pissed that this whole thing happened,” the contestant says. “They could have seen that she was drinking too much and that he was taking advantage. They could have stopped this before it got this far. But they decided to let it go, and let it happen, and see what happened? So, I’m angry at the show, and everyone else is too.”
I don’t know what actually happened. There are probably only a handful of people that do. And I’m sure it will take time to sort out the facts. I hope there was no misconduct and everyone turns out to be innocent.
But regardless, this makes me think twice about how the show treats its stars. And I hope things improve.
